Biotechnology is one of the most research-intensive industries in the world. The U.S. biotech industry spent $15.6 billion on research and development in 2001. Furthermore, the top five biotech companies spent an average of $89,400 per employee on R&D in 2000. Research and development expenditures for pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies are expected to reach approx. $34 billion annually. 80% of the worldwide R&D expenses are spent in the US.

Therefore, we will this year focus on our extensive range of bench-top and pilot plants capabilities. Our range of pilot plants is available for purchase or for short-term lease.

GEA Filtration

Separate Pure Value - Put your cell harvesting and purification process in the lead with membrane filtration, the leading separation technology from GEA Filtration. You get: higher yield, significantly higher purity, high product and process flexibility, and improved down stream processing. The modular membrane filtration systems from GEA Filtration enable you to harvest antibiotics, API's, and enzymes from a wide range of fermentation broths based on yeast, bacteria, or mammalian cells - as gently as required. Add to this CIP and SIP capabilities, cGMP compliance, pilot testing facilities, and validation documentation, and it is clear that no matter your industry, GEA Filtration gives you the solutions to put you in the lead.

GEA Filtration offers a wide range of feasibility- and process development-scale membrane filtration pilot plants. The GEA Filtration range of membrane filtration pilot plants includes models small enough and economical enough for very small-scale feasibility testing to small-scale production simulation units. This wide range of plant size allows opportunity for evaluation of not only technical but commercial feasibility.

GEA Liquid Processing

GEA Liquid Processing supplies process technology through detailed engineering, from conceptual level to manufacturing and delivery of modular liquid plants and automation that can be integrated into a plant wide operation.

GEA Liquid Processing will feature a new portable CIP unit which has been specially developed for cleaning of small and medium sized reactors and vessels that typically are used in development settings.

Additionally, the fermentor, bioreactor, preparation vessel, and storage tank technology from newly acquired Diessel will be demonstrated.

Niro Pharma Systems

Niro Pharma Systems offers the single most comprehensive range of in-house designed and manufactured process units and systems to the pharmaceutical industry. Additionally, Niro Pharma Systems equipment is uniquely suited to the research & development needs of pharmaceutical companies. All our standard equipment, from fluid beds to one-pot processors, is available in a range of sizes, including small units for laboratory and development work. This year we will introduce the brand new tablet coater - the SuperCell™. The SuperCell™ tablet coater accurately deposits identifiable quantities of coating matter on tablets, even if they are very hygroscopic or friable - this is truly a breakthrough technology with small batch capabilities with linear scale-up to full production size.

Niro Soavi

The Niro Soavi scope of supply ranges from table-top laboratory homogenizers through to in-house designed and manufactured cGMP pilot-scale and production skid-mounted systems for cell lysing and particle size reduction applications. On display will be the popular cGMP Pharma NS1001L Table Top Homogenizer which has the ability to process small volumes of liquids and pumpable fluids, homogenizing samples at rates up to approx. 160 ml/min, at pressures that can reach 21,750 psi.

Tuchenhagen Flow Components

Tuchenhagen Flow Components offer the single most comprehensive range of sanitary cleaning devices and mix-proof, single-seat, divert, sample, pressure relief and modulating control valves. Additionally, the Tuchenhagen product recovery systems enable you to recover valuable product and make great savings on CIP liquid. GEA Liquid Processing has the experience to integrate the Tuchenhagen mix-proof valves and product recovery system with single or multi tank CIP systems and optimize your production time in a predictable and repeatable fashion.

Tuchenhagen Flow Components also offers advanced tank-top systems for process monitoring and protection of for instance fermentation tanks or storage tanks. GEA Liquid Processing routinely integrates these into plant operation as well.
