Ultra Filtration (UF)
A separation process using membranes which the pore size is more open, such that salts and sugar molecules will pass through. A pressure driven membrane process which rejects molecules with molecular weight > 1000 Daltons. Typical processes might be improving microbiological quality of milk, decrease spore counts in WPC, reducing transportation costs by milk concentration at the farm, etc. Most common usage is production of whey protein concentrate (WPC).
Urea
Organic compound of carbon, nitrogen, oxygen and hydrogen highly soluble in water. The formula is CON2H4 or (NH2)2CO. Urea was the first organic compound to be artificially synthesized from inorganic starting materials. In mammals, urea is also a waste product of digested protein normally filtered out by the kidneys and excreted from the body in urine. The main commercial use of urea is as a fertilizer but it has many other industrial uses. For instance, it can serve as the raw material for the manufacture of other chemicals including as a raw material for the manufacture of plastics (specifically urea-formaldehyde resin), as an ingredient in cosmetics and as an antiseptic used in deodorants and antiperspirants, mouthwashes, moisturizers, and shampoos.
USDA
United States Department of Agriculture. The USDA, which was founded by Abraham Lincoln, supports rural development, food safety, nutrition and research for agricultural technology. The agency is also in charge of national forest and rangelands and works to reduce hunger in the US and internationally. USDA is also responsible for grading and inspection of meat, dairy and other products, and conducting research programs in animal and plant production and human nutrition (specifically related to public health, USDA also operates the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) nutrition program.).
U.S. Dairy Export Council® (USDEC)
The U.S. Dairy Export Council (USDEC) is a non-profit, independent membership organization that represents the export trade interests of U.S. milk producers, proprietary processors, dairy cooperatives, and export traders. The Council was founded in 1995 by Dairy Management Inc. (DMI), the farmer-funded marketing, promotion and research organization, to build global demand for U.S. dairy products and assist the industry in increasing the volume and value of exports. USDEC accomplishes these goals through market development programs that seek to 1. build overseas demand for U.S. dairy products; 2. resolve market access barriers and 3. advance the industry's trade policy goals. USDEC is funded primarily by the dairy promotion check-off program. It also receives export activity support from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS). Membership dues fund the trade policy and lobbying activities of the Council.
U.S. Department of Agriculture's Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS).
The Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) works to improve foreign market access for U.S. products, build new markets, improve the competitive position of U.S. agriculture in the global marketplace, and provide food aid and technical assistance to foreign countries. FAS has the primary responsibility for USDA's international activities-market development, trade agreements and negotiations, and the collection and analysis of statistics and market information. It also administers USDA's export credit guarantee and food aid programs, and helps increase income and food availability in developing nations by mobilizing expertise for agriculturally led economic growth. FAS also enhances U.S. agriculture's competitiveness by providing linkages to global resources and international organizations.
